A Family Business

in sixth generation

World’s oldest Savonian family business

Story of Lignell & Piispanen started in 1852. We are a family owned alcohol company from Finland. We create unique award-winning brands using natural berries & Nordic design.

The humble beauty and organic strength of our products originates in the pristine forests and marshlands of the Northern Hemisphere. This is where the berries and plants – the 100% pure raw materials for our Gustav Spirits – are found and handpicked.

Premium craft with 170 years of expertise

Our process of distilling the best of what the natural and pure berries and plants offer has seasoned for almost 170 years. The years have sculpted our operation to naked efficiency.

Today, our distilling process is based on extreme transparency and sustainability. For us, this means that not only the raw materials, production facilities, logistics and partners we use are following an ethical code, but it also dictates that we take 100% responsibility for the taste and feeling you experience with our products.

Taste in two words: Arctic kiss

The years have removed the unnecessary from the process towards our goal: Tastes which caress your palate and feeling to embrace all senses – across the full range of our 100% raw Arctic botanical spirits.

In addition to responsible production and high-quality taste, our products emphasize authenticity and uniqueness. This is our story.

From a royal distillery to a family business

In 1852, Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte enacted a new constitution in France, Britain’s Westminster palace was brand new and a young Russian named Leo Tolstoi published his first novel. For our family, 1852 is of particular importance because it is the year our great-great-great-grandfather Gustav Ranin started the family business by purchasing the Crown Distillery, founded in 1783 in the city of Kuopio, Finland. Gustav Ranin’s legacy lives strong on in our family. Ever since the day he took on the king’s distillery, from generation to generation, from father to son, we have learned through experience and increased our knowledge with the goal of creating the finest liqueurs and vodkas from Mother Nature’s arctic splendour.

Keeping our promise with each generation

Much advancement has been made over the course of centuries, and each generation has left its mark and added to our knowledge. But there is one thing that has never changed: our family’s promise to offer most authentic tastes of arctic. For us, this means a deep respect for the arctic wilderness, an artisan approach to its pure botanicals and a continuous effort to achieve better and better results; flavours that highlight the four distinct seasons of the Northern Hemisphere.

Craftmanship with 170 years of expertise

The passing on of traditions from generation to generation has long been the key to our success. Arctic weather conditions add their own challenges that necessitate a dash of innovation and humility – and perhaps a stubborn refusal to give up. Every generation has headed into the future with knowledge passed on by those before them. The years have removed the unnecessary from the process towards our goal: Tastes which caress your palate and feeling to embrace all senses – across the full range of our 100% raw Arctic botanical spirits. And so the story continues.
